ASTANA, March 13. /TASS/. Kazakh Transport Minister Marat Karabayev met in Moscow with Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit and Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov. The parties discussed the development of the North-South transport corridor and coal transit to China, the press service of the Kazakh Transport Ministry reported.
"The heads of JSC NC KTZ (Kazakhstan Railways - TASS) and JSC Russian Railways also took part in the negotiations. The parties discussed cooperation on transportation, including the development of the North-South route and the transit of Russian coal to China through the territory of Kazakhstan," the statement said.
The meeting also considered the prospects for strengthening partnership, increasing the efficiency of transportation and developing transport and logistics infrastructure between the two countries.
Russia, India and Iran signed an intergovernmental agreement on the creation of the North-South multimodal transport corridor in 2000. Later, the number of participants expanded to 14, including Kazakhstan. The goal of the project is to attract transit of cargo flows from India, Iran and the Persian Gulf countries through Russia to Europe (in comparison with the sea route through the Suez Canal, the distance is reduced by more than half, which reduces the time and cost of transportation). Now the project unites several different transport systems of different states.
