BRICS' ability to drive economic growth trumps any external challenges — expert

Brazil took the helm as BRICS chair on January 1. In 2024, the bloc was headed by Russia

BANGKOK, February 27. /TASS/. The economic opportunities stemming from membership in BRICS far outweigh any external pressures on the alliance, with the group’s effectiveness marked by how well it can facilitate infrastructure development and industrial growth among its members, said Meechai Thaocharean, Representative of the International Alliance of Strategic Projects BRICS in Thailand.

"BRICS cooperation is rooted in economic empowerment, technological collaboration, and sustainable trade practices. The effectiveness of BRICS is measured by its ability to facilitate infrastructure development, financial innovation, and industrial growth among its members. By focusing on long-term development projects and fostering intra-BRICS trade, the group continues to create robust economic opportunities that transcend external challenges," he said in answer to a question about how Western sanctions may be affecting cooperation inside BRICS.

"The evolving global landscape presents opportunities for a more interconnected and cooperative world. Thailand embraces a future where economic inclusivity, technological exchange, and sustainable development take center stage. Unlike past economic structures, which often concentrated wealth in specific regions, the emerging multipolar world fosters balanced growth, allowing developing economies to contribute meaningfully to global innovation and trade."

Brazil took the helm as BRICS chair on January 1. In 2024, the bloc was headed by Russia. The keystone event of its presidency was the summit in Kazan on October 22-24, where a decision was made to expand the organization’s membership. The first partners were Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. On January 6 Indonesia became a full member of the alliance. On January 17, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced Nigeria was becoming a BRICS partner.
