Germany to lose ability to help Ukraine in case of sudden embargo on Russian gas, says CDU

BERLIN, April 10. /TASS/. Germany will lose the ability to provide reasonable assistance to Ukraine if its economy is hit by a sudden suspension of Russian gas imports, General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) Mario Czaja said in an interview with the DPA news agency on Sunday.

"The immediate suspension of Russian gas supplies would have such an influence on our economic power that we would no longer be able to provide adequate help to Ukraine," he said, adding that Germany is facing "a difficult moral dilemma." "The issue is whether we will keep millions of jobs, ensure means of living for citizens and, consequently, the social stability in our country," the politician said. Concurrently, he pointed out the necessity to get rid of the dependence on Russia as soon as possible.

Both German experts and politicians say that the country cannot abandon Russian gas urgently. According to the official forecast provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany, the full independence from the Russian gas will be reached by the summer of 2024. Supplies of coal and oil are suggested to be replaced as early as this year.
