BRUSSELS, April 29. /TASS/. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s support for inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit has raised concerns among some EU diplomats, Politico reports.
Montenegro endorsed US President Donald Trump’s proposal to invite Putin to the G20 summit. The prime minister noted that dialogue with Russia is essential for resolving ongoing conflicts. However, this suggestion sparked a negative reaction from diplomats across several European countries, according to the newspaper.
Earlier, the US president said that the presence of the Russian leader at the upcoming G20 summit in the United States in December would be highly beneficial. Nevertheless, he doubted that Putin would attend the summit.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin told journalists at the UN headquarters that Russia has been invited to participate at the highest level in the summit, scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida, on December 14-15. The diplomat added that clarity on who would represent Russia at the G20 summit would emerge closer to the event date.
