US Senate rejects prohibiting use of force against Iran without congressional approval

During the procedural vote, 47 supported and 52 opposed the resolution

WASHINGTON, March 5. /TASS/. The US Senate rejected a resolution demanding that the US administration be prohibited from using military force against Iran without congressional permission, according to the voting broadcast by C-SPAN.

During the procedural vote, 47 senators voted in favor of the document, while 52 voted against it. To be approved by the upper house of Congress, which is controlled by the Republican Party, the document needed a simple majority of lawmakers to support it during the procedural and final votes. A vote on a similar resolution is expected Thursday in the House of Representatives, which is also controlled by the party of President Donald Trump.

The Washington Post previously predicted that these documents would unlikely receive support from the Congress. Even if they are approved by the Congress, the president has the right to veto them.

The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran on February 28. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were struck. The White House justified the attack by citing alleged missile and nuclear threats from Iran. At the same time, US leadership openly called on the Iranian population to rise up against their government and seize power. As a result of the strikes, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other senior figures in the leadership of the Islamic Republic were killed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory operation targeting sites in Israel. US military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were also hit.
