Blackout schedules may continue in Ukraine all winter — head of Ukrenergo

Vitaly Zaichenko pointed out that Ukrainians need to learn from the experience of Europeans and save electricity

MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. Power outage schedules, now being introduced daily for household consumers in Ukraine due to massive damage to the generating and distributing infrastructure, may continue throughout the winter, said Vitaly Zaichenko, Chairman of the Management Board of Ukrenergo.

"It's possible. I can only assure you that we, as the transmission system operator, together with the owners of generation facilities, are doing everything possible to minimize or prevent outages," he said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

Zaichenko added that Ukrainians need to learn from the experience of Europeans and save electricity.

"The Europeans have been doing this for decades. They are just saving energy resources. This means we should do this, too," he said.

Massive blackouts began in Ukraine in early November, when the authorities said energy infrastructure was damaged again. Since then, new damages have been reported, and power outage schedules have spread to most regions. In some areas, there may be no light for eight to 16 hours a day. The capacity of industrial consumers is also limited daily.
