Ex-Moldovan leader says foreign actors meddled in Romania’s presidential rerun

Igor Dodon said that Nicusor Dan secured victory because globalists banned his main rival Calin Georgescu from running

CHISINAU, May 19. /TASS/. Foreign countries and globalists meddled in Romania’s presidential election, facilitating victory for a pro-Western candidate, former Moldovan President Igor Dodon told TASS.

"Clearly, other countries directly interfered in the election process. Globalists and Soros-funded groups use any and all forms of pressure, manipulation, and propaganda," argued Dodon, who is the leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova.

In his view, Nicusor Dan secured victory because globalists banned his main rival Calin Georgescu from running. "We understand that Calin Georgescu would have won this election easily had the globalists not barred him from participating, and [George] Simion was not convincing enough," Dodon explained.

On Sunday, Romania held its presidential runoff, which was won by independent pro-European candidate and Bucharest Mayor Dan with 53.60% of the vote after 100% of the ballots were counted. His rival Simion, the leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians, garnered 46.40%.

The first presidential vote was annulled late last year by the Constitutional Court. Nationalist candidate Georgescu was leading after the first round held on November 24, 2024.

The court cited illegal campaign financing by Georgescu, hacking attacks on the digital infrastructure used in the electoral process, and alleged but unproven Russian interference for its decision.

While this unprecedented move caused an uproar in Romania and abroad, the government upheld the Constitutional Court’s decision and called a presidential rerun on May 4 and 18.
