Over 100,000 refugees return to Syria two months after Assad’s overthrow — official

On top of that, another 5,500 refugees returned to Syria from Iraq in the reported period, crossing the border via the Al Bukamal checkpoint

DUBAI, February 11. /TASS/. More than 100,000 refugees have crossed the Turkish border and returned to Syria two months after the overthrow of Bashar Assad’s government, said Mazen Alloush, a spokesperson for the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports.

"Within two months since the fall of the previous regime, a total of 100,905 Syrian citizens used checkpoints on the border with Turkey to return to their homes," he told the SANA news agency.

On top of that, another 5,500 refugees returned to Syria from Iraq in the reported period, crossing the border via the Al Bukamal checkpoint.

In late November 2024, armed opposition units launched a large-scale offensive on positions held by Syrian government forces in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces, capturing several major cities: Aleppo, Hama, Deraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered Damascus, prompting government troops to withdraw from the capital. Bashar Assad resigned as Syrian president and left the country.
