If former US President Donald Trump wins his bid to retake the White House in November 2024, he may increase military support for Ukraine dramatically and will pursue a more active policy there than the current administration of President Joe Biden, a leading Japanese expert on defense issues forecast in an interview with TASS.

"The Biden administration has held a moderate stance, as it would hate to increase the level of tensions in Ukraine through NATO, nor would it want a [direct] NATO-Russia confrontation," said Daisuke Kawai, deputy director of the Economic Security Research Program at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo. "However, Trump may change these policies. In his election campaign speeches, he has said that the United States may possibly retreat from military support for Ukraine, if he wins the election, while, in reality, I doubt that it would happen," he maintained.

"Under Trump, I think, Ukraine will likelier receive higher-class assistance, including weapons that may be a gamechanger and reverse the course of hostilities. At least political advisors of the Trump presidential era think so," Kawai added.

On February 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country was ready to work with any US president that is elected by the American people, but that it would prefer Biden. The Russian leader described the incumbent US president as more experienced and predictable person and an "old school" politician. Putin reiterated his opinion in the following days.
