IEA chief sees demand for gas payments in rubles as ‘security threat’

Birol also said that IEA member countries shared the goal of trying to drastically reduce reliance on Russian oil and gas imports

PARIS, March 25. /TASS/. The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, on Thursday said Russia’s demand that some payments for its gas supplies be made in rubles is a threat to energy security.

"I would consider it as one of the other security threats made by Russia," he said at a news conference following an IEA ministerial meeting.

Birol also said that IEA member countries shared the goal of trying to drastically reduce reliance on Russian oil and gas imports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said Russia will refuse to accept payments for natural gas in compromised currencies, including the dollar and euro, and will shift to rubles. He said future changes in the gas supply contracts with unfriendly countries will affect only the currency of payments.
