PRETORIA, January 18. /TASS/. More than 86,000 confirmed coronavirus cases were registered in African countries in the past three days, with the overall number of such cases exceeding 3.261 million, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office for Africa said on Monday.
The overall number of COVID-19 cases in Africa currently stands at 3,261,271, with 86,610 cases confirmed during the past three days. The number of coronavirus-associated deaths amounts to 78,911, with 2,186 fatalities registered in the past 72 hours. More than 2.6 million patients have recovered.
South Africa accounts for the biggest number of Africa’s coronavirus cases and fatalities - 1,337,926 and 37,105, respectively. Egypt is second after South Africa in terms of coronavirus-associated deaths and cases - 8,583 and 156,397, respectively. As many as 7,942 coronavirus-related deaths were reported from Morocco.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ethiopia is second after South Africa in terms of coronavirus cases (131,195 cases and 2,030 fatalities). Next are Nigeria (110,387 cases and 1,435 deaths), and Kenya (99,162 cases and 1,731 deaths).
