World’s governing basketball body FIBA extends suspension of Russia, Belarus until May

The world’s governing body of basketball suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on March 1, 2022 over the ongoing developments in Ukraine

GENEVA, March 14. /TASS/. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has extended the suspension of Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs from all tournaments supervised by the federation until May 2025, FIBA’s press office announced in a statement on Friday.

"The status of Russia and Belarus has been extended until the next FIBA Central Board meeting which will take place in May 2025," the statement reads.

The world’s governing body of basketball suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on March 1, 2022 over the ongoing developments in Ukraine. The national teams were also excluded from the qualifiers for the 2023 Basketball World Cup.

The Russian national basketball teams were barred from playing in the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

In November 2023, the FIBA Executive Board ruled to extend indefinitely the suspension of Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs from all tournaments supervised by the federation.
