NEW YORK, April 1. /TASS/. Renowned American director and producer Steven Spielberg has topped the list of the world’s wealthiest celebrities, according to the 39th annual ranking of dollar billionaires published by Forbes magazine.
According to the ranking, the 78-year-old filmmaker’s fortune is estimated at $5.3 bln. Spielberg first appeared on Forbes’ list of the wealthiest Americans in 1994, just a year after the release of his blockbuster Jurassic Park (1993). The film earned three Academy Awards and grossed over $900 mln worldwide.
To date, Spielberg has directed more than 30 films and has served as a producer on numerous additional projects. In addition to his earnings from the film industry, Forbes notes that Spielberg receives a 2% share of ticket sales from Universal Studios theme parks.
Ranking second among the wealthiest celebrities, according to Forbes, is fellow American director George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars universe. The 80-year-old filmmaker’s fortune is valued at $5.1 bln.
Rounding out the top three is basketball legend Michael Jordan, whose net worth stands at $3.5 bln. A six-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Jordan remains one of the most financially successful athletes in history.
