MADRID, May 8. /TASS/. Several hundred people took part in the Immortal Regiment march to commemorate those who fought or died during World War II in Madrid on Sunday.
Participants marched from the Atocha railway terminal to the Prado Museum carrying portraits of their relatives and friends who fought against Nazism during World War II and within the resistance movements during the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939. Due to the difficult international situation, the march was organized by Spanish activists. Law and order was ensured by the police. An address by Russian Ambassador to Spain Yuri Korchagin was read out at a rally after the march.
It was the seventh Immortal Regiment march in Madrid.
At the beginning of the march, a woman with the Ukrainian flag tried to hamper it. Apart from that, several people were escorting the march shouting out slogans against Russia and in support for Ukraine. The police took efforts to prevent possible incidents.
The Immortal Regiment movement was first launched in the city of Tyumen in West Siberia in 2007 and was initially called "Victors’ Parade." It acquired its current name in 2012 in Tomsk, and in 2013 it involved 120 cities. The movement officially became nationwide in 2015.
By now, the Immortal Regiment march has spread beyond Russia.
