Russia points to inexpediency of deploying nuclear weapons in space

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that "there is no element of arbitrary decisions and everything follows military and military-technical expediency"

MOSCOW, February 24. /TASS/. It is technically inexpedient to place nuclear weapons in space and existing systems for their delivery are sufficient, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Saturday.

"Deploying nuclear weapons in outer space is inexpedient from all viewpoints. This medium is inappropriate for deploying such weapons. Existing systems for their delivery that include the triad of ground-based, airborne and seaborne components in most cases in five global nuclear powers are quite sufficient," the senior Russian diplomat said.

"There is no element of arbitrary decisions and everything follows military and military-technical expediency," Ryabkov said.

Some American media outlets reported earlier that the so-called threat to the US national security could be posed by Russia’s alleged plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that these publications were nothing else but another ploy by the White House. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out during a meeting with Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu that Russia "has always been and is strongly against deploying nuclear weapons in space.".
