MOSCOW, February 12. /TASS/. Scientists from Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) have developed a new technology to produce high quality aluminum alloys, which reduces the total smelting time by 20-50%, the university's press service said in a statement.
The new technology involves dissolving refractory metals in superheated aluminum melt, the report said. The development's defining feature lies in the introduction of refractory metal ligatures before superheating the aluminum melt to 1000-1100°C, and after reaching this temperature, the melt is stirred every 15-20 minutes until cooling.
"Modern technologies for producing aluminum alloys are unable to provide for the complete dissolution of refractory metal inclusions. This compromises the mechanical and corrosion properties of the alloy. Our patented method allows to exclude the presence of undesirable intermetallic inclusions and oxides and obtain an alloy of high quality," the report quotes the words of the author of the idea, Candidate of Technical Sciences Sergey Malopheyev.
The total melting time is reduced by 20-50% when applying this method, the press service reported.
Aluminum alloys are used in the transportation industry and are especially in demand in the aerospace and shipbuilding industries, the report notes.
The research was conducted under the Priority-2030 strategic academic leadership program.
