Putin ready for talks with Zelensky, whose legitimacy remains questionable — Kremlin

"At the same time, how the agreements can be legally enshrined is the subject of serious discussion," Dmitry Peskov added

MOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready for talks with Vladimir Zelensky, whose legitimacy as Ukraine's leader is questionable, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"Putin himself has repeatedly said that if necessary, he will also negotiate with Zelensky," the spokesman recalled.

"At the same time, how the agreements can be legally enshrined is the subject of serious discussion, taking into account the reality that speaks about the possibility of challenging the legitimacy of Zelensky himself," Peskov added.

Russia has repeatedly emphasized its interest in a peaceful settlement in Ukraine through diplomatic means. At the same time, Putin has pointed to the zero sovereignty of modern Ukraine, as well as the illegitimacy of Zelensky, who calls himself head of state. The Ukrainian constitution does not provide for the postponement of presidential election during martial law (which was the pretext for Kiev's refusal to hold the vote), so Zelensky's powers expired on May 20, 2024.
