Russia not interested in arms race, new Cold War — senator

It is emphasized that Russia doesn’t want another prolonged Cold War with the West but wants to be an equal party in the resolution of all global matters

MOSCOW, April 3. /TASS/. Russia is against an arms race and calls for equitable global trade and a fair financial and currency system, a Russian senator said on Monday.

"Ensuring nuclear security, preventing biological threats and terrorist attacks, and combating transnational crime constitute strategic areas of Russia’s foreign policy. We stand against an arms race, for fair global trade and the financial and currency system (without foolish, inefficient, and groundless Western sanctions), for international humanitarian cooperation and unbiased information about Russia’s role and place in history and the current state of modern global security," Viktor Bondarev, chair of the defense and security committee of Russia’s Federation Council (upper parliament house) wrote on his Telegram channel.

He emphasized that Russia doesn’t want another prolonged Cold War with the West but wants to be an equal party in the resolution of all global matters. "That is why, it is necessary to listen and properly respond to Russia's rational and constructive proposals," he wrote.

According to the senator, the new concept of Russia’s foreign policy is a historically important document marking the transition toward a new world order based on multipolarity, international law and the rejection of the West’s hegemony. "It recognizes the indivisibility of security in the global and regional aspects: it is necessary to respect the sovereignty of states in the name of maintaining a multipolar world. It will lead to enhancing the role of the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization - TASS) and the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization - TASS) in the issues of international cooperation and defense, respectively. Russia will continue to advocate the supremacy of international law in international relations, the priority of peaceful diplomatic means in settling conflicts over force the United States and its allies have been demonstrating for decades," he added.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin endorsed the updated concept of the country’s foreign policy. According to the document, Russia can use its armed forces to defend itself or its allies and thwart aggression against them.
