Russia doesn’t see progress about resuming talks on Iranian nuclear deal — diplomat

Ulyanov said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi paid a "fairly constructive" visit to Tehran last week

VIENNA, March 6. /TASS/. No progress is being made about resuming talks for restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions on the Iranian nuclear program, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s envoy to the international organizations in Vienna, told TASS on Monday.

"As regards the resumption of talks to restore the JCPOA, there’s no progress there," Ulyanov said. "Iran as well as Russia and China are ready to finalize the decision to return to the original parameters of the nuclear deal, which has been almost entirely agreed on," he said. But the UK, Germany, France and the US, the envoy said, aren’t willing to do so for the time being.

Ulyanov said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi paid a "fairly constructive" visit to Tehran last week. "The director general met with the president of Iran, the foreign minister and the head of the Atomic Energy Organization. Additional measures have been outlined to inspect and monitor Iran’s nuclear facilities, which have yet to be finalized," the diplomat said. Iran issued a statement that it’s ready to engage with the IAEA on uranium particles that were discovered in Iran a few years ago.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany. Former US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in 2018 while the current US President, Joe Biden, has signaled that he is ready to resurrect the agreement. Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the US and France have been in talks with Iran since April of last year to reinstate the deal.
