MOSCOW, May 21. /TASS/. The cost of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases for the European Union (EU) has increased by 4.6 times in four years due to an increase in prices and volumes of LNG supplies from Russia, according to a publication by Eurostat.
According to the statistical agency, due to rising prices, the cost of liquefied natural gas imports from Russia in the first quarter of 2025 increased by 359% compared to the first quarter of 2021.
Russia's share in LNG imports to the EU in the first quarter of 2025 fell to 19%. The United States still holds the largest share in liquefied gas supplies to the EU (48%).
As Eurostat noted, Russia's share in pipeline gas imports to the EU fell from 48% in the first quarter of 2021 to 17% in the first quarter of 2025. During this period, Norway's share increased the most (+11%), while Algeria (+5%) became the largest partner with a share of 30%.
Earlier, TASS reported citing Eurostat data and its own calculations, that in the first quarter Russia ranked second after the United States in the total value of gas imports to the EU with a share of 18.2%, despite the complete stop of pipeline gas transit through Ukraine since the beginning of the year. In total, the European Union purchased gas from Russia in the first quarter for about 4.5 billion euros, which is 28% more than a year earlier.
