TASS, April 22. The Arkhangelsk sea port’s total traffic over one year was more than 5 million tonnes (9% growth year-on-year). The region plans to increase the traffic with a new port on the White Sea. The port will be in the city of Onega. The traffic handling will grow up to 4 million tonnes, the region’s Governor Alexander Tsybulsky told a business forum on Arctic ports.
"In 2021, the Arkhangelsk sea port’s traffic was more than 5 MTPA (million tonnes per annum), where export cargo made a quarter of the traffic. The traffic growth was about 9% year-on-year," he said. "In 2022, we forecast the traffic growth. I would like to draw your attention to the Arctic sea port in Onega, where we prepare the implementation of the Port-Industrial Park investment project - a complex to serve cargo handling on the Northern Sea Route, including freight accumulation and storage."
The Onega port’s capacity is estimated between 1 and 1.5 MTPA, with an optional growth to 4 MTPA. At the same time, the governor continued, the number of commercial vessels, for which Arkhangelsk is the home port, "has a stable growing tendency." In 2021, the port registered 39 new vessels, including ice-class vessels.
"The project’s potential is evident even at the very beginning. Onega has a rail connection, it has a direct access to the White Sea. The Onega District has the status of an advance-development territory and may offer investors a number of incentives. The port’s area will be 167 hectares, investments in the project’s first stage will be about 1 billion rubles ($12.8 million). We know the investor, who is ready to begin the project," the governor added.
