Iran’s intelligence minister warns against accords with the US

Esmaeil Khatib believes the United States is likely to intensify its pressures on Iran after the inauguration of President Donald Trump

DUBAI, January 22. /TASS/. Tehran should maintain its ‘policy of resistance’ against the United States, as Washington has consistently failed to honor previous commitments, Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib emphasized.

"The Americans are always eager to conclude agreements, but they have never upheld them. Therefore, continuing our approach and principle of defiance is the sole route to success for us," the Tasnim news agency cited him as saying.

He believes the United States is likely to intensify its pressures on Iran after the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

"They [the new US administration] will present offers daily, either to entice or threaten us," the official remarked.

Trump's inauguration ceremony occurred on January 20. For the first time in 40 years, it was conducted in the Rotunda — the central hall of Congress, which can hold about 1,000 guests. Trump took the oath of office, pledging loyalty to the Constitution and the nation. He was previously the 45th president of the United States and now serves as its 47th.

In his inaugural address, Trump proclaimed that the strength of the United States would enable it to resolve all conflicts and foster global harmony.

During his initial term (2017-2021), Trump adopted a hardline stance on Iran, enacting harsh sanctions on the Islamic Republic, exiting the Iranian nuclear agreement, and enhancing support for Israel across political, military, and economic spheres. Before assuming his second term, Trump alluded to the possibility of a military confrontation with Iran, citing Tehran’s alleged endeavors to develop nuclear arms.
