NEW YORK, March 26. /TASS/. US officials have assured Europeans at private meetings that US President Donald Trump supports the North Atlantic Alliance and will not withdraw nuclear weapons from Europe, The New York Times reported.
Officials in the Trump administration "have privately reassured Europeans that the US president supports NATO, will retain the American nuclear umbrella over Europe and remains committed to collective defense," the newspaper wrote in an analysis piece.
According to it, Trump’s views are famously changeable, and he "persists in viewing NATO as a club where members pay for American protection."
French President Emmanuel Macron said in a televised address to the nation earlier this month that he would launch discussions with allies on extending France’s nuclear protection to Europe. He called Russia a threat to his country and to the entire EU to substantiate an increase in military spending and the idea of sharing French nuclear weapons with the EU.
