LONDON, March 21. /TASS/. London’s Heathrow airport announced a closure until midnight on Friday after a fire at a nearby electrical substation caused a major power outage.
"Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To ensure the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 11:59 p.m. on March 21," the airport said in an X post.
An airport official said while fire squads have responded promptly, it is not clear yet how soon stable electricity supply will be restored as he did not rule out severe disruptions in the operation of the air hub, Europe’s busiest, in the next few days, too.
The London fire brigade said it had evacuated around 150 people from nearby buildings in Hayes in western London.
According to the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, or Eurocontrol, it was confirmed 120 flights will need to divert due to the shutdown.
