SEOUL, March 1. /TASS/. Mass rallies in support of and against the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol are taking place in Seoul, a TASS correspondent reported.
Conservative and religious organizations are holding a rally in support of the head of state in downtown Seoul. According to unofficial police estimates, about 60,000 people are participating in the event.
Another rally organized by conservative circles is taking place in the Yeouido District, where some 28,000 people have gathered.
One more rally kicked off near the Constitutional Court’s building at 2:00 p.m. local time (5:00 a.m. GMT), with demonstrators demanding that Yoon be removed from power. Another protest against the president, led by five opposition parties, is expected to take place here later; the organizers say they expect 100,000 people to participate.
The Constitutional Court held the last hearings in Yoon’s impeachment case earlier in the week. A verdict is expected by mid-March. According to a Gallup Korea poll published on Friday, 59% of those surveyed support the president’s impeachment, while 35% oppose the idea.
