SHANGHAI, February 25. /TASS/. Ukraine’s current dire situation has been brought about by its immature political elites and their lack of understanding of international relations, according to Song Luzheng, a researcher at the China Institute of Fudan University.
"It is obvious that Ukrainian elites are simply incompetent, which has led the country to its current disastrous situation," he said in an article published by the China Institute of Fudan University. "Undoubtedly, maintaining good-neighborly relations and political mutual trust between Ukraine and very powerful Russia is the most important national strategic interest [of Ukraine]. It is the basis of its security and sovereignty."
US President Donald Trump believes that the US was "foolish to invest huge amounts of money in a war that did not bring any economic benefit," the researcher said. According to Song Luzheng, Ukraine faces the future of being abandoned by Washington.
"The main reason is the immaturity of the country's elites and their lack of a clear understanding of the harsh nature of international relations," he wrote.
"In 2021, the US abandoned the Afghan government, which it had supported and built up for 20 years," the researcher said. "How could Ukraine believe that the US would support it to the end?"
"Ukraine's fate is simply a repetition of history," he wrote.
The New York Times previously reported that the US and Ukraine were close to concluding an agreement that gives Washington a share in Kiev's revenues from natural resources but does not guarantee Ukraine's security. According to the NYT, Vladimir Zelensky could come to the US to sign the deal this or next week. In early February, US President Donald Trump said Washington was interested in obtaining rare-earth metals from Ukraine.
