UNITED NATIONS, February 24. /TASS/. The US has issued a diplomatic note, urging the United Nations General Assembly to back a Washington-drafted neutral resolution on Ukraine and vote no to an anti-Russian one, Reuters reports.
According to the news agency, Washington has asked countries to "vote no on any other resolution or amendments presented." The US described its draft as "a forward-looking resolution focused on one simple idea: ending the war." Washington also believes that "through this resolution, Member States can build real momentum towards international peace and security, the maintenance of which is the principal purpose of the United Nations."
Earlier, the US for the first time refused to co-sponsor the UN General Assembly's anti-Russian draft resolution on Ukraine; in contrast, the document presented by Washington does not blame Russia for starting the conflict. The resolution mourns the tragic loss of human life "in the Russia-Ukraine conflict," calling for ending it as soon as possible.
Initially, Kiev and Western countries were expected to put their draft resolution to the vote in the UN General Assembly like they always do in late February. Now, however, the UNGA schedule also includes a vote on the US-drafted resolution.
