CHISINAU, February 10. /TASS/. Moldova will ensure transit of gas to Transnistria from Hungary if Tiraspol observes a number of conditions, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.
"We allow this transit whereas Tiraspol will take several steps demonstrating openness, including to release political prisoners, to resolve the lyceum issue in Rybnitsa, to maintain the Moldovan public television, to remove control posts established in 2022 (of 33 posts 11 are still active)," he wrote on his Facebook page (Facebook is banned in Russia due to its ownership by Meta, which has been designated as extremist).
"This is not an agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Russia or other structures, but a government’s permission allowing citizens of Transnistria to receive gas and not to freeze," Recean stressed.
Chisinau will not block gas supplies to Transnistria, though the region will continue living in a state of uncertainty due to this decision, the premier noted.
"The decision chosen by the Tiraspol regime means that citizens of Transnistria will continue living in a state of uncertainty and uneasiness regarding gas supplies. This is not a solution to a long-term problem. However, we will not block gas supplies or let people on the left bank [of the Dniester River] freeze," he wrote.
Transnistria’s authorities have rejected the second grant worth 60 mln euro proposed by the EU for coping with the energy crisis, Recean said.
"In the mid-term the EU’s proposal in the amount of 60 mln euro was a solution that would enable the Transnistrian region to get rid of blackmail and energy instability. However, Tiraspol rejected this solution," he said.
Earlier, the EU and Moldova agreed on a two-year strategy for Chisinau’s full integration into the EU’s energy market with budget worth 250 mln euro. Under the strategy, overall support for Moldova would account to 250 mln euro for 2025, of which 100 mln euro would be provided by the European Union by mid-April. In addition to this overall support, and as part of the same strategy, an offer of 60 mln euro was made available for the people in the Transnistrian region of Moldova (the Left Bank).
