Iranian Supreme Leader meets with Hamas politburo chief

As Fars reported, Ali Khamenei and Ismail Haniyeh discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank

DUBAI, November 5. /TASS/. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei met with Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, the Iranian news agency Fars reported on Sunday.

According to the news agency, Khamenei and Haniyeh discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. The Iranian leader reportedly stressed the need for resolute actions by Islamic states and international organizations, as well as for all-round practical support for the Gaza population.

Israel has repeatedly accused Iran of being behind Hamas’ attack. Moreover, The Wall Street Journal newspaper said that Iran helped Hamas leaders to plot the attack on Israel and greenlighted the attack at a meeting in Beirut on October 2. The Iranian side, however, is rejecting these allegations.

Tensions flared up in the Middle East after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked Israeli territory, killing many Israelis living in the settlements near the border and abducting more than 200 people, including children, women and the elderly. Hamas views its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ steps against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
