Earthquake kills at least 769 in Syria, Health Ministry says

According to the ministry, at least 1,448 suffered injuries in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Idlib in the country’s west and northwest

BEIRUT, February 7. /TASS/. At least 769 people were killed in a major earthquake that hit Syria on Monday, the country’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday in a statement on Facebook (banned in Russia as it is owned by Meta Corporation designated as extremist by the Russian authorities).

According to the ministry, 769 people were killed and at least 1,448 suffered injuries in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Idlib in the country’s west and northwest.

The Al Arabiya TV channel reported on Monday night that the quake death toll in Syria had risen to 1,060. The El Sharq TV channel, in turn, said, citing the Syrian Health Ministry, that another 2,400 people had been injured.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras on Monday. The quake was followed by almost 150 aftershocks, which were felt in ten regions of Turkey, as well as in neighboring countries, including Syria. A short time later, another powerful earthquake was recorded. According to the latest data, over 3,300 people were killed in Turkey and over 20,000 suffered injuries.
