Lithuanian top brass says snap drills in Belarus pose no threat to republic

On May 4, Belarus is holding a surprise inspection of its response forces, in which troops will practice going on combat alert, conducting marches to designated areas and accomplishing combat training tasks

VILNIUS, May 5. /TASS/. A surprise military exercise that kicked off in Belarus poses no immediate threat to Lithuania, Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas told reporters on Thursday.

"There is no immediate threat to Lithuania," the defense minister said. "Such a threat emerges when units and equipment are deployed on the border, creating fuel and logistics support bases. We do not see all that," he said.

As the Belarusian Defense Ministry reported on May 4, Belarus is holding a surprise inspection of its response forces, in which troops will practice going on combat alert, conducting marches to designated areas and accomplishing combat training tasks.

Minsk has also indicated that the forces involved in the drills will be built up stage by stage to check their ability to fight military threats both on the ground and in the air.
