Russia views incidents in Transnistria as acts of terrorism — Foreign Ministry

Moscow condemns attempts to drag the region into the situation in Ukraine, Maria Zakharova pointed out

MOSCOW, April 28. /TASS/. Moscow is concerned about rising tensions in Transnistria and views the recent incidents in the region as acts of terrorism, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.

"We are concerned about rising tensions in Transnistria, where several incidents involving shelling attacks and explosions at government buildings and infrastructure facilities have taken place in the past few days. We view these actions as acts of terrorism aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region and expect that a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances of what happened will be conducted," she emphasized.

Zakharova also said that Russia strongly condemned attempts to drag Transnistria into the situation in Ukraine. The diplomat pointed to "numerous sensational statements that Russian peacekeepers and Transnistrian conscripts, particularly at the Tiraspol airfield, are making preparations for an offensive action."

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed that Moscow was taking note of such statements, while the situation on the left bank of the Dniester River remained under the control of joint peacekeeping forces. At the same time, in Zakharova’s words, attempts to take advantage of developments in Ukraine in order to intensify a blockade on Transnistria are causing concern.

"The deliveries of essential goods, including medications, are being blocked, artificial obstacles are being created to hinder the activities of industrial facilities. We call for restraint and calm in Transnistria and urge Chisinau and Tiraspol to return to a constructive search for the best solutions to the issues on the agenda, including interaction between the two banks of the Dniester for the benefit of the people," Zakharova concluded.
