Ex-chief of world’s governing ice hockey body gets Russian citizenship — source

Rene Fasel was granted Russian citizenship on January 17, 2022

MOSCOW, February 15. /TASS/. Rene Fasel, former president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was granted Russian citizenship last month, an undisclosed source told TASS on Wednesday.

"Fasel was granted Russian citizenship on January 17, 2022," the source stated.

Rene Fasel served as IIHF chief for 27 years before the new president, Luc Tardiff, replaced him in September 2021.

The Swiss-born former dentist with a gift for languages and a deep passion for ice hockey, was first elected to run the world’s governing body of this sport in June 1994. He was re-elected for a sixth presidential term at the 2016 IIHF General Congress in Moscow.

According to the excerpt from the United State Register of Legal Entities, Fasel took possession last week over 54% shares in Alma Holding, a producer of premium class apples under the intensive technology in Russia's southern Krasnodar Region.

Remaining 46% shares are held by Volga Agro Group, a manufacturer of crop production agents and a member of Volga Group, owned by businessman Gennady Timchenko. Fasel, who is 73 years old, was included into the United State Register of Sole Entrepreneurs on February 10, 2023.
