Construction of longest tourist steps in Russia to begin in Norilsk in 2023

It is reported that the steps' total length will make 5.6 km

KRASNOYARSK, November 17. /TASS/. The construction of the longest in Russia tourist steps will begin on the Schmidt Mountain in Norilsk (the Krasnoyarsk Region's north) in spring, 2023. The steps will be longer than 5 km, and the construction will be done in stages, the Norilsk Development Agency's Deputy Director on tourism Anastasiya Korol told TASS.

The Schmidt Mountain is a place, from where Norilsk began. In 1921, the first wooden house was built on the mountain slope. The area keeps remains of coal mines, a narrow-gauge railway, coal transporting trolleys. From the mountain's top visitors can see the Norilsk valley and the Putorana Plateau spurs - the Kharaelakh Mountains.

"The steps' total length will make 5.6 km. The construction will begin next spring as soon as the snow melts away. We hope the first stage of 1.02 km and an observation deck at the height of 240 meters will be commissioned in 2023," the agency's representative said, adding the construction would be done in three stages.

The first part will go along the "paleontology route." The second part of about 1.5 km will be devoted to Norilsk's early years. It will lead to the Norilsk Golgotha memorial complex. The third, final, part of more than 2.5 kilometers will be aimed at sports and educational activities. The agency does not say when the construction will be over.

Russia's previous record in tourism steps also belongs to the Krasnoyarsk Region. Tourist steps of 1.2 km on the Torgashinsk Ridge, a popular tourist location, were opened in Krasnoyarsk in December, 2021.
