International Red Cross not involved in evacuation from Mariupol, Sumy — statement

At the same time, it was stated that it was urgently necessary to give the civilians a rest from violence and to make sure they receive humanitarian aid, regardless of whether safe passages will take place

GENEVA, March 8. /TASS/. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) does not assist in evacuation of the people from Mariupol and Sumy, the organization said in its statement Tuesday.

"The International Committee of the Red Cross does not assist the evacuation from Mariupol and Sumy today," the Geneva headquarters of the humanitarian organization said in its statement, adding that there are currently no Committee representatives in Sumy. As for Mariupol, the Red Cross "has no details regarding the potential agreement or guarantees of security" that would make it possible for the organization to take part in the evacuation.

"It is urgently necessary to give the civilians a rest from violence and to make sure they receive humanitarian aid, regardless of whether safe passages will take place," the organization said.

On 10:00 Moscow time, the Russian side imposed a ceasefire and opened humanitarian corridors from Kiev, Chernigov, Sumy, Kharkov and Mariupol, according to Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov.
