Court postpones hearing on libel case against Alexey Navalny until February 12

MOSCOW, February 5. /TASS/. Moscow Babushkinsky District court postponed the proceeding on the libel case against blogger Alexey Navalny until February 12.

"The questioning of the witness is over for today. We postpone the hearing to 10 AM Moscow time on February 12. We will continue questioning the plaintiff’s witnesses," the judge ruled.

On Friday, the court listened to testimonies of the victim and three witnesses presented by the prosecution. Throughout the hearing, Navalny kept yelling at witnesses, spoke over the judge and spoke insults towards the victim, his family, journalists, the judge and the prosecutor.

Navalny is being accused of libel, which carries a fine or obligatory community service. According to the investigators, on June 2, the blogger published a vide in his Telegram channel and Twitter account, in which World War II veteran Ignat Artyomenko expressed his position in support of the amendments to the Russian Constitution. The video was accompanied by Navalny’s comments, which, according to the investigators, "were knowingly false and damaged the honor and dignity of the veteran, undermined his reputation."

Navalny does not admit his guilt. Earlier, the court suspended the proceedings, but restored it after the blogger returned to Russia.
