First uncrewed Moon mission under Artemis program due in August — NASA

The deadlines of the program were postponed many times

WASHINGTON, May 18. /TASS/. An uncrewed flight around the Moon, to be carried out by the Orion spacecraft under the Artemis program, is scheduled for August, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson told the Committee on Appropriations of the US House of Representatives.

"We’re going to launch it in August, it will be uncrewed," he said.

In 2017, the United States launched the Artemis program, which at that point aimed to bring "the first woman and next man" to the Moon's South Pole by 2024. The program’s schedule was released in spring 2019. The first stage, Artemis 1, envisages an unmanned flight of the Orion spacecraft to the Moon’s orbit and back atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. During the second stage, Artemis 2, a manned spaceflight will travel to the lunar orbit. During the third stage, Artemis 3, a moon landing will be carried out with the possibility of a mission to the Mars in 2030s.

The deadlines of the program were postponed many times. Last year, Nelson admitted that performing a moon landing in 2024 was technically impossible and should be postponed until at least 2025.
