Russian foreign minister arrives in Mauritania on first-ever working visit

He is scheduled to meet with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug

NOUAKCHOTT, February 7. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Mauritania on a first-ever working visit on Tuesday, a TASS correspondent reported.

Lavrov arrived in the country’s capital Nouakchott from Bamako, Mali.

He is scheduled to meet with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug.

The Russian foreign ministry said the sides plan to have a detailed exchange of opinions on pressing issues of international and regional agenda, including the situation in North Africa, Middle East and the Sahara-Sahelian region.

Special attention will be paid to bilateral relations, primarily to development of cooperation in marine fishing, including in the context of ensuring favorable working conditions for Russian fishermen working in Mauritania’s exclusive economic zone.

The delegations will also address other matters related to Russian-Mauritanian trade and economic cooperation and look for new promising areas of mutually beneficial business ties.

Mauritania is located on northwestern Africa’s Atlantic coast and has the population of around 3.9 million people. Diplomatic relations between Moscow and Nouakchott were established in 1964.
