Duma member Andrey Lugovoy for closing UK embassy in Russia

Andrey Lugovoy suggested doing this on December 14

MOSCOW, October 20. /TASS/. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption Andrey Lugovoy has proposed closing the UK Embassy in Russia on December 14, 2026.

"I would like to address the Foreign Ministry. It is high time we closed the UK Embassy, I suggest doing this on the day the exhibition (of an international project titled Britlag - TASS) kicks off, on December 14, the International Day Against Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations," Lugovoy told a plenary session of the State Duma.

Lugovoy also announced plans to visit the Solovetsky Stone in Moscow on October 30 to personally present the British ambassador with a souvenir: a figurine set depicting a scene from Vasily Vereshchagin’s painting The Suppression of the Indian Revolt by the English, which shows a British soldier executing a sepoy using the "devil’s wind" method (firing a cannonball through the body of a person tied to the muzzle of a cannon).

The lawmaker also suggested holding the Britlag exhibition dedicated to the victims of the British colonialism outside the UK Embassy and a contest for the best site for a Britlag monument in Moscow, London, New Delhi, Beijing, Kenya and Jamaica. Additionally, he called for an expert review of history textbooks to assess the extent to which they "reflect the colonial face of Britain."

Lugovoy emphasized that Russia should assist countries in Africa and the Caribbean in their work regarding reparations commissions, ensuring that Britain "pays its bills."

"The 'Britlag' project will provide our friends with a parliamentary platform. We will seek support from the Foreign Ministry and assist with archival research - the 'Britlag' library already contains over a thousand such records. We will also facilitate the preparation of legally substantiated claims; we have conducted in-depth analysis in this area and are ready to move forward," he noted.
