Putin reflects on his talks with former German Chancellor Kohl

The Russian president praised Helmut Kohl as a "pivotal political figure of our time"

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described his conversations with former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl as productive, noting that he remembers meetings with him fondly.

"Speaking of world leaders who have passed away, I had contacts, which were not particularly close but spanning a significant period, with German Chancellor Kohl. He was a figure of international stature, and not only because he was a prominent man, but also because of his actions and his principles. From my first meeting with him in 1993, and for many years after he had ceased to serve as chancellor, he would visit me infrequently but regularly. And I had the pleasure of talking to him," the Russian leader said during his combined Q&A session and annual press conference.

The president praised Kohl as a "pivotal political figure of our time." "He did much for his homeland, for the German people, and he was a significant European political leader. I recall with interest many of my conversations with him, which were very beneficial for me. I say this without any exaggeration, very beneficial," he concluded.

Helmut Kohl was at the helm of Germany for 16 years, between 1982 and 1998. In 1990, he became the first German leader after its reunification. The politician passed away at the age of 87 on June 16, 2017.
