UN Security Council fails to adopt Russia-drafted Middle East resolution

Out of 15 members of the UN Security Council, four supported the draft resolution, two (the UK and the US) voted against it, while the other nine abstained

UNITED NATIONS, October 26. /TASS/. The UN Security Council has not adopted the Russia-drafted resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a TASS correspondent reported.

Out of 15 members of the UN Security Council, four supported the draft resolution, two (the UK and the US) voted against it, while the other nine abstained. A resolution is considered adopted if nine members of the UN Security Council support it and no country vetoes it.

It is the second resolution authored by Russia. It incorporates some elements from both Brazilian and US drafts, including Russian amendments to the Brazilian version. In particular, it condemns the radical Palestinian movement Hamas’ attacks on Israel, and calls for an immediate ceasefire, the establishment of humanitarian corridors and the release of all hostages. It also contains a proposal to cancel Israel’s order on evacuation of Gaza Strip residents to the south of the enclave.

Earlier, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that Moscow sees no reason why the Security Council members cannot give the green light to the Russian draft.
