Russia, Iran stress need for multipolar world, says lower house speaker

It was stressed that Russia stands for a "fair world order and for a multipolar world" and noted that these issues are important for other states as well

TEHRAN, January 23. /TASS/. Russia and Iran share the view that issues of a just world order and a multipolar world are of paramount importance, visiting speaker of the Russian State Duma, or lower parliament house, Vyacheslav Volodin said on Monday.

"We are against any hegemony and think it right to unite lawmakers of all countries to do their best to defend the sovereignty of each country. So that each nation is free to elect its own government and decide its own future. These are basic issues for us and we see understanding from our Iranian colleagues," he said after a meeting of the interparliamentary cooperation commission.

He stressed that Russia stands for a "fair world order and for a multipolar world" and noted that these issues are important for other states as well.

"Only a sovereign state can ensure the development of a human being on the basis of its culture, history, language, respecting his or her traditions and beliefs. A country which has lost its sovereignty cannot do this. Its citizens will be doomed to profess a religion, culture, traditions, and study the history of the country that enslaved them," he said.

Volodin is leading a Russian parliamentary delegation which arrived in Tehran on an official visit on Sunday.
