UN to turn into League of Nations if P5’s veto right is dissolved — Putin

Vladimir Putin noted that it’s important not to make any mistakes when reforming the UN and including other states in the list of the UNSC permanent member-states

SOCHI, October 21. /TASS/. The United Nations is running the risk of turning into the League of Nations in case the veto right of the five UN Security Council permanent member-states is ruined, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

"If we dissolve the veto right of permanent members [of the UN Security Council] the UN will die on the same day, it will turn into the League of Nations," Putin stressed.

Putin noted that it’s important not to make any mistakes when reforming the UN and including other states in the list of the UNSC permanent member-states.

The Russian leader noted that China has outperformed the US in terms of purchasing-power parity, and also pointed to a significant growth of India’s economy. "And Africa is not represented for some reason, and what about Latin America? Certainly, we should think about this. This is a topic for discussion, but there shouldn’t be any fuss, we must prevent any mistakes on the path towards reforms," he said.
