Deployment of intermediate range missiles in APR threatens Russia's East — Shoigu

According to the Russian Defense Minister, the threat coming from the missile defense may be counterbalanced by building up the amount of attack weapons, but this will mean a new spiral of the arms race

MOSCOW, June 23. /TASS/. The deployment of intermediate range missiles in the Asia-Pacific Region in combination with the missile defense system will pose a threat to Russia's eastern regions and trigger another spiral of the arm race, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told the Moscow International Security Conference on Wednesday.

"Should a decision to deploy intermediate range missiles be made, such a situation will pose a threat to the eastern regions of Russia. The threat coming from the missile defense may be counterbalanced by building up the amount of attack weapons, enhancing their combat parameters and improving the rules of using them," Shoigu said.

He stressed that any of these decisions would mean a new spiral of the arms race, which would slow down the economic development of a region that is an engine of the world economy.
