Iran's mission to UN says did not receive Trump's letter for Khamenei

Earlier, the US President said in an interview that he would prefer to make a deal with Tehran and reiterated that Iran should not have nuclear weapons

UNITED NATIONS, March 7. /TASS/. Iran's permanent mission to the UN has not received US President Donald Trump's letter to the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proposing talks on Tehran's nuclear program, an Iranian diplomat told a TASS correspondent.

"We have not received such a letter so far," the diplomat said.

On Friday, Trump said in an interview with the Fox Business TV channel that he would prefer to make a deal with Tehran and reiterated that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.

Earlier, Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that Moscow expressed readiness to help Washington in negotiations with Tehran. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, said that the Kremlin sees the potential for a peaceful settlement of the situation with the country’s nuclear program, which worries the United States. According to him, Russia is ready to do everything possible for this purpose.

On February 4, Trump signed an executive order to restore maximum US pressure on Iran. The document provides for the intensification of Washington’s efforts to reduce Iran’s oil exports. At the same time, the US leader allowed the possibility of a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and said he wanted to make a "great deal" with Tehran.

On February 7, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that it was impossible to negotiate with the United States because it had already deceived Tehran once. Washington concluded a nuclear deal, failed to fulfill its terms, did not lift anti-Iran sanctions and unilaterally terminated the agreement, Khamenei recalled.
