Talks with US would undermine Iran's standing in Middle East — Iranian MP

According to Taghi Naghdali, history shows that cooperating with the US only results in increased pressure and new threats against Iran

DUBAI, February 17. /TASS/. If Iran decides to hold talks with the United States, it will only weaken Tehran’s standing in the Middle East, bearing in mind its policy toward resistance forces, an Iranian lawmaker said.

"Iran’s regional policy and its position on the Axis of Resistance have led to a situation when any talks with the United States will be viewed as the weakening of Iran’s positions in the region," Taghi Naghdali said in an interview with the Dibdan Iran portal.

According to Naghdali, history shows that cooperating with the US only results in increased pressure and new threats against Iran. That is why the Iranian parliament and other power bodies are categorically against any talks with Washington, he added.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on February 7 that talks with the US were out of the question given how it deceived Iran when it unilaterally terminated the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

US President Donald Trump said on February 10 that Iran could only be stopped from developing nuclear weapons by bombing or by way of a diplomatic agreement. According to Trump, he is for making a deal with Iran, refraining from military strikes.
