NEW YORK, December 13. /TASS/. Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov has agreed to plead guilty to four charges, including obstruction of justice and tax evasion.
Smirnov, who was arrested in February and is in custody, faces four to six years in prison, according to his plea agreement filed in federal court in Los Angeles.
According to the document, Smirnov admitted to lying to the FBI by claiming that he attended meetings with representatives of the Ukrainian company Burisma in 2015-2016. He lied that they discussed a plan to pay $10 million in bribes to Joe and Hunter Biden. Smirnov also fabricated a conversation with a Burisma representative who allegedly claimed that it would take 10 years to find evidence of such payments.
US media outlets have noted that the plea agreement could signal the end of Special Counsel David Weiss' investigation, which has been looking into the allegations against Hunter Biden since 2019. Earlier this month, Joe Biden signed a pardon for his son, drawing criticism for breaking a promise not to interfere in his family's legal affairs.
