WASHINGTON, December 11. /TASS/. NATO could make a ‘crazy’ decision to place B-61 nuclear bombs in Poland or Ukraine, The National Interest magazine reported on Wednesday.
After the United States and its NATO allies have rejected every opportunity to deescalate the conflict over Ukraine and granted Kiev permission to launch strikes with Western-made long-range missiles deep inside Russia, the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in Poland or possibly even Ukraine should be taken seriously, it said.
That said, the transfer of American-made B-61 nuclear bombs appears to be the most likely scenario, the report said.
However, the idea that the West would allow nuclear weapons to be stationed in or transferred to Ukraine, a non-NATO member, "is essentially crazy," the magazine stressed.
Earlier, Poland announced that it was ready to equip its fleet of US-made F-35 Lightning II fighter jets with American B-61 nuclear bombs, the report added.
First developed in the early 1960s in the United States, "B-61s have been stationed in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey over the years," it noted.
These bombs can also be launched from the American B-2 Spirit long-range nuclear stealth bomber, the F-15E, and the F-35, the magazine explained.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on December 5 that the scenario of the Kiev regime obtaining nuclear weapons was completely unacceptable. The Russian diplomat emphasized that Moscow was determined to prevent this scenario.
