South African elections not to impact friendly ties with Russia — envoy

"We are not yet through with all our post-election processes and are now busy with setting up the government," Mzuvukile Maqetuka added

MOSCOW, June 25. /TASS/. The results of general elections in South Africa will not affect the nature of relations with Russia which will continue to develop, the country’s Ambassador to Moscow Mzuvukile Maqetuka told TASS on the sidelines of the 10th Primakov Readings forum.

"We will always be moving in a good friendly direction. We are not yet through with all our post-election processes and are now busy with setting up the government. But absolutely the fundamentals of our relations will remain. The key foreign policy will not change - it's too rooted to history," the diplomat said.

In February, the envoy did not rule out changes in South Africa’s foreign policy and BRICS membership should the opposition come to power following the presidential election. However, on June 14, Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as the country’s president following the May 29 general elections.

The Primakov Readings international forum is being held in Moscow on June 25-26. TASS is the event’s general information partner.
