Israeli strike kills senior commander in elite Hezbollah unit in Lebanon

Israel attacked southern part of the state, Reuters says

BEIRUT, January 8. /TASS/. An Israeli strike has killed a senior commander in Hezbollah's elite Radwan force in Lebanon, Reuters reported citing three security sources.

The commander and another Hezbollah fighter were killed when their car was hit in a strike on the Lebanese village of Majdal Selm, sources said. One of them added that things might flare up now.

Israel attacked south Lebanon, according to sources. More than 130 Hezbollah members have been killed in Lebanon since October 7, Reuters added.

Tensions flared up in the Middle East after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked Israeli territory on October 7, when many Israelis living in the settlements near the border were killed and over 240 people, including children, women and the elderly, were taken hostage. Hamas views its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ steps against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
